Indian Reservations

Question by doulasc: Indian reservations?
Why did our government put native americans on reservations? They were here long before us.Are they
allowed off their reservations to go in to town to shop etc.
Do they go to public school with other kids or does the
reservations have their own school?Do the indians leave
their reservations to go to work or are most on welfare?
Any websites about life on a indian reservation?
From what I understand is it true that most Indians dislike
the white man?

Indian reservations are really sweet to the indians…they are just like real town but they have there own laws, On reservations indians can hunt anything they want any time they want, they can fish with out licenses…they sell anything they want and pretty much do any thing they want. Indians can also come and go as they please and work and go to school where they want. So basically they get all the benifits of being a american, but they get payed for being indian and they don’t have to follow the same laws as us and they don’t have to pay taxs. If your on a indian reservation and they don’t like the look of you they will kick your ass and then call the reservation police and they will do what ever they want even if you didn’t brake any of their laws.

Reservations are areas that are reserved to the tribes after most of the lands were taken.
Indians are allowed off the reservations, and many do leave to shop, go to town, work, or choose to live off the reservation. however many remain on the reservation becasue it is home.
Reservations have their own schools, hospitals, etc, they are really nations within this nation.
There are many Indians and other minority people who dislike “the white man” in general or as an abstraction, but when people get to know each other as people, abstractions fall by the wayside.
Unemployment is a problem on many reservations, this is one reason many Indians go to the cities to find work. However, tourism and gaming are helping the employment situation in recent years.
For more info you can put the name of your favorite Indian tribe into your search window. Many tribes have official websites, and you can visit these websites and find out more about life in that tribe, on and off the res.
(Some people take offense at the word “Indian” for Native American, however, most Indians that I know call themselves Indian, or else by their own tribe name. So that’s why I say “Indian”. “Native American” isn’t used as much. Some find it stilted or fake, or ironic because they were here before there was a political entitiy called America.)

The white man was so wrong for stealing the land belonging to the Native Americans–not to mention killing a whole bunch of them off, killing the buffalo, and putting the American Indians on reservations.

Some Native American children go to the public schools in their area. Others may have schools on their reservations.

Many Native Americans own casinos now, and they support themselves with the profits. Others own stores, etc. Still others work traditional jobs.

Some Native Americans dislike some white people. Don’t stereotype!

Some may assume they have all the facts on indian reservations …
The history of when the reservations came about is when the “white man ” was killing, taking, and stealing all what the indians knew,
including the land they were blessed to share with mother earth, so to ‘make it look good’ they “reserved” a very small chunk of land for the indians accross america and most time it was the least wanted part of land but we got the scraps sort of speak.

We are all human bleed the same color etc. as we all have different beliefs.
Many may be unaware of when the white man came to the land it is the INDIANS WHO KEPT THEM ALIVE TAUGHT THEM HOW TO SURIVE, FEED THEIRSELF,SHELTER THEIRSELF FROM THE DIFFERENT SEASONS. HELP THEM STAY CLEAN “CLEANLINESS IS GOOD” INDIANS MAY HAVE LIVED IN TEE PEES AND I TELL YOU THEY KNEW HOW TO KEEP THEM CLEAN AND ORDERLY

many people say it is a wonder that the indians didnt let them all die( white people) but that was not the indian way,
see someone in need of help you do what you can to help them!

Indians choose to stay on the reserves because that is home “deep roots” and it is true that there is schools on the reserves for the natives and they do good teachings as well as cultural awareness classes so the upcoming generation can know their history.

some choose to live off reserve … no biggie thats not a ‘crime’ we are free to live wherever we choose, work where we want,

geeze indians are not on leashes with boundaries or anything
it is true that some reserves have their own police and different laws yet not so different.
There is poverty on reserves as there is poverty all over the world.
Welfair supports those who cannot support theirself and family-it does not mean all indians living on a reservation is on welfair. there is plenty elders that have retired and live off pension etc. young students prepairing for college… good and bad is everywhere no need for me to go into it all !

There are plenty websites for you to check out and get more information vs. what I can give you!
this link will give you a good start—

The Indigenous people of present day United States were placed on reservations so that their home land could be taken by European people that ran from their home lands to get away from the same treatment that they put the people of the lands that they were given freedom to take after many battles without little more then the effort to take and say it’s mine now.

Present day reservations are now called home to the now named Indian race of people to live as their ancestors did spiritually and some still have the gift to live through what the land can offer,. The Natives go off reservation to attend schools and to purchase staples while living with racism and sub standard living conditions. Many tribes such as the great tribes of the plains and the eastern tribes fought many battles to save their lands. There are 567 federally recognized tribes that have reservations to call home. There are many tribes that are seeking recognition by the federal government so that they can claim a smaller portion of land to call home where their great great great grand parents once lived.

The welfare system for some Native tribes is there main source of income without welfare they would be worse off then they are. I have nothing more on that matter. If all tribes were allowed to market their resources in the 20th & 21st century just as all people are allowed to do in this country the tribes would have been a plus for the tax system as the casino tribes are today

They were put there by people who wanted their lands. However they are not confined to it. They are just as much citizens as the rest of us and can go wherever they want likewise.
